A Tragic Loss For Aotearoa

Dr Apirana Mahuika Passed away


Dr Apirana Mahuika , died in Kaiti, Gisborne 09 FEB 2015 after a long illness. Named after the illustrious Ngāti Porou leader Sir Apirana Ngata, Dr Apirana Mahuika followed in his namesake’s footstep, working for the wellbeing of Māori, and particularly, his iwi of Ngāti Porou. Tuutuu Kaahika send our deepest sympathies to the whanau as we have a special affiliation to him through our Whaea Wharekuka who holds her Ngati Porou Iwi, whanau in high regard with pride. Tama Turanga Huata


64 year old Tama Turanga Huata, died in Hawke's Bay 11 FEB 2015. He is one of the best-known advocates of Maori performing arts and a mentor to many singers, songwriters and performers, he was also the inaugural chairperson of the Te Matatini Society and was the founder of the Waiata Māori Music Awards. Huata exported Maori performing arts to the rest of the world via his Kahurangi Maori Dance Theatre, which he set up in Hastings in 1983.
Both men will be dearly missed and remembered by us all who hold all things Maori near and dear to our hearts, and we pay tribute to their dreams and aspirations for Maori and Aotearoa through all that we do in Tuutuu Kaahika including during our stand at Te Matatini this year in Otauta'i.
