A huge success – taranaki puanga festival 2014
The three day Taranaki Puanga Festival 2014 has just run in Waitara, and has been judged a great success by participants, stall holders, supporters and visitors. Special events like the Korowai presentation, Tūtū Kā’ika Te Reo, The Puanga Ball, under 13s Kapahaka Competition and 40 Puanga Idols contestants all attracted record entries and big crowds. You can check out the winners and photos on this website. As per usual the the event was a gold coin donation at the door, for a full day pass.
The Tūtū Kā’ika Te Reo Stage with over 70 participants this year was full to overflowing. Sessions including Zumba and kaumatua krump proved particularly popular. Of course the major attraction was the 45 kapahaka teams showcasing their talent after working all year to reach this moment on stage at the Taranaki Puanga Festival. Our stall holders showcasing local food, beverages, Taonga and other services were able to increase their opportunities to engage with the crowd of almost 10,000 over the first two days of the festival due to the recent inclusion of a massive video screen and audio system that broadcast the events live to people outside of the hall when performances were taking place. If you would like to see some of our exhibitors. Have a look through the list below and give them a call if you need some new ideas or prices Visitors really enjoyed the combination of a whanau atmosphere within a competitive realm, all while emphasizing our unique culture and encompassing Kota’itanga. Members of the crowd had a chance to get up and speak about their experience at the Taranaki Puanga Festival either as first timers or veteran supporters of the event, much to our surprise many have traveled from Australia and other overseas locations just to attend and support their whanau, community and the event itself, tourists from abroad were also attracted to the event as a unique insight into Māori language, performing arts, protocols and the inclusivity of New Zealand’s culture. This was also supported by the fact that Te korimako 94.8fm were able to broadcast the entire festival live across the globe through the innovation of online broadcasting and social media to spread the work prior and during the event. The continuum of building our W’anaungatanga & Te Kota’itanga Celebrating & promoting our own unique Taranakitanga is an integral aspect of the Taranaki Puanga festival because these are treasures that I hold near & dear to my heart.
The sports day was a huge success as usual with around 20 teams participating all day, stalls operating along with the big screen and audio system to maintain the fun, family atmosphere. The next show will run from 29 Oct - 31 Oct 2015 at the Waitara War Memorial Memorial PL, WAITARA ,4320. It will be bigger than ever, with most exhibitors and participants rebooking immediately at the festival. Visitor and participant registrations will open early next year.
